In his solo debut recording Brad Henkel presents an eclectic collection of acoustic trumpet pieces. The pieces display a stunning variety of textures and timbres that Brad has cultivated over the years by refining an array of extended techniques and personal approaches to the instrument.
Beautifully recorded, the music exhibits both Brad's unique take on the instrument as well as his skill and inventiveness as an improviser.

“‘Bay’, for example, sound as if the sound is made electronically, save for the audible breath-taking. Henkel has the technical skills to make all these pieces sound so easy. ‘Chant’ is a low murmur and throat singing coupled with high trumpet overtones. An exquisite piece to listen to. “Sappiamo che un suono è costituito da più frequenze, che sentiamo tutte insieme percependo un suono unico. Cosa succede se registriamo uno strumento contemporaneamente con più microfoni, disposti in posti diversi?
Succede che ogni microfono enfatizza alcune frequenze e ne indebolisce altre. E se poi spezzi le registrazioni e inanelli un pezzettino da ogni microfono? Senti quasi in simultanea le impressioni diverse dello strumento registrato, come se fossero più di uno.
Questo è ciò che ha fatto Brad Henkel con la sua tromba per l'album “Croon”, uscito per Neither/Nor Records. Oltre a fare i tipici esperimenti che in questi anni ascoltiamo spesso dagli ottoni, cioè sottolineare il flusso d'aria nascondendo le note, per far sentire la tromba come un tubo che emette aria, giocando con armonici e vibrazioni, Brad Henkel sembra anche imitare la voce umana.
I brani dove si capisce al meglio l'esperimento moltiplicatore di frequenze e presenze dello strumento, sono “Bay”, “Purr” e “Mope”. In pratica, dissezionando il suono, Brad Henkel ha realizzato una tromba cubista!” (May 2023)
